Warm sockets, burning smells and RCDs that trip at 3am are all telling you something. Here is how to read them.
Warmth, smells and scorch marks
A faceplate that is warm to the touch, a faint fishy or burning smell, or brown marks around a socket all point to a loose or overheating connection. Stop using the point and get it looked at.
Repeated tripping
An RCD that trips occasionally in a storm is one thing. One that trips every time the shower runs is telling you a circuit has deteriorated insulation or a faulty appliance is on it.
Old cable and old boards
Rubber or fabric insulated cable, rewireable fuse carriers and wooden backed boards belong to a different era. If your board has ceramic fuses, an upgrade is overdue.
Flickering and dimming
Lights that dim when a large appliance starts can indicate an undersized or loose supply connection, which is worth investigating before it fails properly.
